It all started when I was about 14 years old, going to Rock'n'Roll clubs with my parents and sister. We used to go to a place in Luton called "The Luton Rock'n'Roll Club" which was held at the British Rail Social Club one Saturday of the month. It was there I first tried my hand at DJing, my dad was friendly with the event organisers (Gary, Tall Paul and another chap who I cannot remember the name) and asked them if they would mind giving me a half hour guest spot. The following month I picked a hand full of my dads original 45s in a cardboard box and we all went up to the club. I was given a quick rundown on how it worked but it didn't take long as I had watched people like 50's Flash and Wildcat Pete for as long as I can remember who my parents also got on really well with, I did my bit and it became a regular spot at the club for the next year or so until the club stopped. There were also the odd one off nights that DJs Rockin' Rick and Ray (of Hackney Hospital) and Big Bob who would give me me a little half hour stint at their clubs which also went down quite well but I would never use the microphone (I was shit scared to).
It wasn't until 1991 when a couple of local people started the "Hemel Hempstead Rock'n'Roll Club" which 50's Flash used to do on a Thursday night in the old town. One night Flash couldn't make it (bad case of flu) the organisers Mick and Thelma called me up and asked if I could cover the night which I leaped at the chance and coped with it OK. This was the first time I started using the mike (only when I needed too!). Shortly I was asked if I wanted to do this alternate weeks with Flash which we did for a while until some other DJ's took over (who would play stuff that wasn't really Rockin' and they were cheep) this eventually killed the club in 1992. Around this time Keith gave me a call (he used to organise "The Horn of Plenty" nights in St. Albans) Simon the DJ there had lost his driving licence and couldn't do the club so Keith wanted to have different DJ's every week and asked if I was interested. This was the first time I had to work a night with a band, this being "Sir Bald Diddley and his Right Honourable Big Wigs" when they had virtually just started out doing more Rockabilly covers (with upright bass!) than their more well known Surf material. The Horn was short lived and only lasted a month or two with some good gigs but Keith the organiser had fallen out with the landlady of the pub and consequently the club stopped. Keith managed to find another pub "The Abbey Tavern" in St. Albans, this ran for a few months with different bands and DJ's including myself but was an awkward funny shaped place (not much room to dance) and eventually closed down due to redevelopment.
In 1993 I had my 21st birthday party at the "Horn of Plenty" with Mouse DJing and the Deltas playing live, this was also to promote the return of the Horn of Plenty on Friday nights that a friend of mine at the time Phil was organising. It started off with just myself DJing for about a month then Big Bob started to help with the organising and started to bring bands in, the first of which was the Bopshack Stompers. We had some good bands play there including the Blue Rhythm Boys, the Ricardos and the Ranch girls from Holland. We had one night DJ special with guest DJ Jerry Chatterbox. The club came to an end a few weeks later due to people getting lazy or going to the allnighters that Mouse was doing at the Monarch and the Jungle Club.
In late 1993 or early 1994 Jerry Chatterbox called me and asked if I was interested in being a guest DJ at the Camden Workers as Tom Ingram had given up the workers for a while, I couldn't believe it, when the night came round I was the worst bag of nerves I had ever been for a long time but once I had got a couple of records out of the way I settled down I thoroughly enjoyed it and was asked to come back in the following years. Also around this time Ritchie Gee had started The Tennessee Rock'n'Roll Club where he was going to have different DJ's and bands every week he called me up and I gave it a go and have played there on and off up until now.
In 1995 and 1996 as well as the Camden Workers and the Tennessee I did a few parties, a couple of birthdays, one with the Playboys on an extremely wet night in April (Rob Glazebrook had broken down in a large puddle in the lanes around Slip End and needed a tow start), another in Welwyn Garden City with the Flying Saucers and some early members from the Rattlers and a christmas party for Lal Hardy and Martin Clark for their Tattoo shop, New Wave Tattoos..
In 1997 my friend Shaun approached me an asked if I was interested in starting up a club in north London for a few one off'. Shaun had dabbled in DJing with the Collins Kids from south London and wanted to build his confidence a bit, he found the place and it coincided with my 25th Birthday so what the hell lets do it, the Winchester Hall Tavern was a huge success we did four nights there that year including an after Hemsby party with Guest DJ Go from Japan and an all day Christmas Party Special which started off in Dingwalls with The Space Cadets with Shaun, Virgil and myself DJing then after a few bevies in the Elephants Head it was off to the Winchester where myself and Shaun and Guest DJ Mouse went on till 1 am, that night was packed we had to turn people away. I was also asked to do the Tennessee's New Years Eve party with guest DJ Robin's Bakelite Boogie.
1998 we did one more night at the Winchester I got a call from Miss Corinna, she was organising the Red Rose Club on Seven Sisters Road which went on till 2 in the morning. Shaun and I DJayed there with Blue Voodoo then another night with just us DJing both good nights. In May we did the Hemsby DJ Showcase which went down well considering the time of day (3 in the afternoon most people hadn't got up by then!). July and Big Beat Chris called and asked me to guest at the Boston Arms, I also had a call from Miss Corinna, the Camden Workers was cancelled for some reason and she wanted to put on a night at the Red Rose with me and Shaun, but Shaun was out of the country so we got Mouse instead, well what a night that was Mouse also asked me to guest at the Monarch the next day, another busy weekend! I did a few nights at the Workers and the Tennessee that year and I got a call from Robin Scott, he wanted to set up a club around the Harefield area, this was just a one off with a band "One Track Mind" it was a good night and was offered some more nights if he could sort them out. I finished the year at Dingwalls, a Christmas Bank Holiday Special that Mouse had organised with "Jack and the Rippers" and the "Blue Devils" with Guest DJ's myself, Shaun and Reb.
1999 kicked off with a new place that Robin Scott had organised the first Saturday in January with the "Hicksville Bombers" this turned out to be a very good night I was amazed to see so many people out so soon after christmas. I did a night at the Camden Workers and a few at the Tennessee Club and a couple of birthday party's one of which was at the Boston Arms with the "Arousers". I started to do more at Harefield United Football Club this was starting to be a regular first Saturday of the month gig for me, bands including the Jets, Mustang, Texas Shakedown, Blue Voodoo, The Arousers, the Whodeanies and Jack King and the Aces, just to name a few. I also did a couple of nights with Shaun at Mousies "Atomic Cocktail Club" in Hampstead, a one off leaving party at the Winchester also with Mouse and Shaun and an all night house party for Amos Clarke who was moving out of his flat.
2000 saw another first Saturday of the month at Harefield with the "Hicksville
Bombers" again a good turnout, Feb. with the "Kool and the Krazy"
March with the "Tennessee Rhythm Riders" and April with "Big Rumble".
Shaun and myself did a one off at the Boston Arms with Germany's "Smokestack
Lightnin'" and I DJayed with Mouse at the Red Rose and a Guest Spot at
the Camden Workers with new resident DJ "Tim's Heptunes"
